Welcome to Week 3 of Black History month, where we are curating collections to celebrate the past, present, and future of the African diaspora. Each week, we’ll spotlight Black authors, Black-produced films, Black-owned businesses in Indiana, and more.

This week, we’re focusing on five of our favorite, local black-owned businesses. This obvious isn’t an exhaustive list, so if you’re looking to support more businesses this year, check out this Indiana list.

Carmel, IN

Christina has more than 20 years of experience in the beauty industry, and she’s been nationally recognized for her excellence. She’s been trained and certified by top colorist and educators and has exclusively traveled to Paris, France to receive top education from industry leaders from around the world.

In fact, two of our board members visit Christina for all their hair needs, so she comes highly recommended. She provides a variety of hair-related services, luxury hair products, beauty/fashion products. She regularly hosts seminars for other beauty industry professionals on how to craft machine-sewn units.

Local fashion designer Codi Banks designed her first piece at the age of 12. Since then, she’s continually elevated not only her craft but also aspiring fashion designers with one-on-one sewing classes. She designs a wide variety of pieces– from ready-to-wear, to couture, to super cute face masks. Check out her shop!

What does a five-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year and an Olympic Gold medalist do after retiring from her playing career? Besides serving as the Vice President of of Basketball Operations and General Manager of the Fever, she buys a tea shop on Indy’s near north side.

Tanisha Stewart has set out to prove the world wrong– that soul food is “too fatty” or “too sugary.” Her approach to food is best described as coming from the caveman or “paleoithic” diet which consists of ingredients that could only be gathered by hunting or gathering. And thus, Paleo Soul was born.
